15.: Fifth session of the Council of Foreign Ministers, breakup between USSR and USA

10 Dec. I get my RC card back. The Antifa member Fritz Schäfer didn’t like some of my remarks (“bank robber” and “misanthrope”). So he also reads or censors our mail.

10 Dec 47. We want fair percentages. A spravka[1] (request) to the camp authorities is not accepted. There is constant manipulation in the settlement of accounts. With anger and mocking laughter we learn from the press and radio how the homeland is lied to about our true situation.

Christmas paper silhouettes are stuck to the window of the NKVD office (the political commissar). Some things in Russia are incomprehensible.

We are working on the eastern outskirts of the city on a plot of land that is supposed to become a car repair workshop. At the moment there are only 2 small houses on it. We have to fit a stove into one of them. In a few days we had finished the work made of bricks and clay. The secretary, who has her office in the other house, comes over to inspect the stove. But she is not quite satisfied and a bit ungracious in general. Now we are building an assembly pit for car repairs on the same plot. We dig a pit 1.80 m deep and lag it from the inside. When we then pour in the concrete mix, the boarding bends a bit despite the strutting. After a few days the concrete was hard and we could remove the boarding. The pit is finished, but the concrete walls have a slight belly inwards. As the very friendly nachalnik inspects our work, he quietly weighs his head and smiles indulgently. His criticism is mild. After all, the bulge is not quite that bad, and the pit is ready for use in any case.

Our plot is the last built-up space on the outskirts of town. Right next to our fence, the fields of a collective farm begin. The potatoes have already been harvested, but there are still so many of them in the ground that we dig up another bucket of potatoes from every square metre. We do this every day and thus improve our lunch.

We see the reason for the many potatoes in the soil in the work norms system: every collective farm worker has to harvest a certain area per day in order to reach 100%. If he works thoroughly, he hardly reaches it. So they botch the job. They only hoe them superficially or simply tear out the forbs. The potatoes that are pulled out are collected, the many others remain in the ground. The main thing is to meet the norm.

From the collective farm come several panje carts packed with cabbage heads. They drive them into town. We are working on the road in front of our car repair shop and smile friendly at the girls who are riding in the back of each car. We wink at the girl on the last wagon and she immediately understands. She lets a few cabbages roll off the cart.
