Summer 1948: Entraining logs at the of Barysaw “ramp”

18 June. Loaded wagons. 3 accidents, one of which was a broken bone. And on top, we are often accused of sabotage or self-mutilation.

Accidents non-stop.

As of 1.6. we are affiliated to Minsk.

Guard dogs are also employed to guard us. - My own situation is bearable, but the exploitation and harassment remain: Working past closing time, or in pouring rain, or on holidays, or without food.

We always talk of the ramp here, but there is no ramp at all. We load from the flat ground. We carry the 2 m logs, alone or in pairs, depending on the weight, by balancing upwards on a thick plank that is placed at an angle to the wagon from the ground. The heavy 6-10 m long logs are loaded from the side, into high, four-axle Pullman wagons[2] with box bodies that are only open at the top. The loading method, primitive as many things are in the Soviet Union, is illustrated in the following sketch. Understandably, this causes many accidents.

  2. These Pullman wagons were no luxury passenger wagons but Pullman freight cars. Under the Lend-Lease Act, the USA supplied 11,000 freight cars to the Soviet Union.
