10. Juni 1946
10 June 46. Two officers have fled. A collective punishment is imposed on the whole battalion. The battalion leader and some "guilty" officers are imprisoned and all the rest of the battalion is crammed into one barrack where they have to spend the night. Compared to others, this punishment was small, but nevertheless collective punishment is a violation of the Geneva Convention.
The missing toilet paper is replaced by tufts of grass. One has wrapped his first-aid kit around a little stick, like a small timpani mallet. It is rinsed off after each use. Until the Russian finally remedies the situation and drives up with a whole lorry full of books. Almost all religious literature. We pick out the best books to read. The rest we put to their intended use. Ivan probably cleaned out a pastor's entire library.
