Today they put a new rubber tube in my wound. I have only been lying here for four days. I could have held out here even longer. But today I am going home on a hospital train. Again I am loaded into an ambulance and driven to the station. Unfortunately I can’t see anything through the frosted glass. Lying on the stretcher, I only feel the bends when the vehicle goes around a corner. Then I am loaded onto a train and leave the city.
It is a beautiful, airy express train carriage that has been converted into a hospital carriage. There is an aisle in the middle, double beds by the windows on the right and left. I lie in an upper bed by the window. The train rolls out of town over the bridge that spans the mighty river. It is the only moment when I can catch a glimpse of the city and the river. And then the well-sprung train rolls out into the vast Ukrainian countryside. For days and nights, the train rattles towards home. The wheels knock non-stop and zealously. Homeward! Outside, sunny Ukraine flies by. As if in farewell, its golden-yellow wheat fields laugh at us. Again and again, my gaze wanders over this infinitely wide land, shimmering under the burning July sun.
We also feel the heat, but the breeze from the moving train fans us with pleasant coolness. The nurse looking after our car is very friendly, but the food is mediocre. The nurse explains that the food is nutritious and hearty, which is often teased by the bluff Landsers.
We stop in Lemberg. German Red Cross nurses come into the car and hand out gift bags with the imprint: “The Führer greets his wounded”. In the bags are biscuits, sweets and some cigarettes.
Next to the roadbed at the station is a large administration building. There are girls standing at many windows of the multi-storey building. They are all looking at our train. The wounded are looking over. First there are glances back and forth, then friendly smiles, then waves and greetings. The Landsers tempt them with their gift bags, but they wave them off with thanks and smiles.
