More picture postcards of Bad Schandau, below with railway station (sent in 1920/1950/1941)

29 (30?) July 43.[2] I ended up in the military reserve hospital Reservelazarett Bad Schandau. I am admitted to a former pension[3], which is located directly on the Elbe. Now it serves as a military hospital. From our balcony we have a magnificent view of the steep-sided, romantic Elbe valley and the river. It is a warm summer day, and many women and girls in colourful, airy summer dresses are strolling along the riverbank promenade. It’s a picture I haven’t seen for years. Paddle steamers paddle whooshingly through the water, while small motorboats ferry traffic between the banks. Diagonally below us is a landing stage where people gather and form a colourful cluster. But we sit up here and look longingly down at this colourful hustle and bustle, because we are not allowed out yet.

Apart from me, there are two young lieutenants in the room. A handsome, blood-young Austrian and a dark, lively artillery lieutenant, whose standing expression is: “I have just come from Orel.”[4] He had taken a shot to the chest, but his identification tag had intercepted the bullet.

Not being allowed to leave the house yet is really tough, given the warm summer weather and the number of gown-wearing people on the promenade. To make matters worse, I have developed sciatica. When I stand upright, I don’t notice anything, but as soon as I lie down in the soft bed at night, the damn pain sets in. Then I get up in the middle of the night and limp up and down the room on a stick because I can’t sleep from pain. Now I get radiation twice a day under the light box. After a few days, the pain is gone.

I noticed a stenotypist in the administration today. Curly and red-cheeked, with light blond hair and flashing blue eyes, she looked at me in a remarkably friendly way.

Today the Austrian got visitors. His mother and his 15-year-old picture-perfect sister are here. Very well-groomed and cultured. Good Viennese society.

(When I frequently talk about picture-perfect girls, they really were picture-perfect. Of the many other less pretty ones I do not even speak).
