Probable position of kurgan “Arty Pimple” east of Lebedinskij |
The next morning, a meeting is held at the commander’s. Shortly before nightfall, we are loaded onto lorries along with our heavy weapons and transported to the front. After a long zigzag journey, we stop in the middle of the terrain. We have reached our new defence section and are to relieve a nearby unit. It is a dim winter’s night. All around us, as far as we can see, is vast, snow-covered land, without trees or bushes, like everywhere else in the endless plains of southern Ukraine. The only prominent point is a high, man-made hill, behind which we stopped. This hill is about ten metres high and was originally a trigonometric point. Today, a bunker has been built into its upper part, which houses an artillery observer position. It is therefore known as the “Arty Pimple” to the local unit, the only orientation point for messengers and a favourite target for Soviet artillery.[1]
We have unloaded our equipment. Position troop marshalls pick up the groups. My bunker is nearby, so I and my messenger soon have our things stowed away. I pay a brief visit to the battalion command post to introduce myself and find out any news. The circle is very cheerful, but I don’t stay long because I want to visit some of my positions. However, given the width of the front and the distances involved, I can only visit one of my mortar positions. I don’t want to wander too far in the unfamiliar terrain at night, otherwise I might end up with the Ivan. The mortar position is fifty metres behind the HKL (main line of resistance).
My command post is very comfortable compared to the caves we used to live in before. It has two proper cots, a small table with a bench and a stove!
