Deutsch

It looks as if the Nikopol bridgehead is to be cleared. In any case, we are to be loaded and re-deployed at Kriwoi Rog. For the time being, however, this only applies to the regimental staff and two battalions, including my own.[1] I am appointed loading officer of our battalion.

  1. The order of the relocation, which incidentally had already begun on the 23rd (KTB 6.A., NARA Roll 1482 Frame 000478), cannot be fully reconstructed from the surviving KTBs. It seems logical that the battalions were moved regiment by regiment. This means that first the Aufklärungsabteilung 257 was moved individually, then the two battalions of Gren.Rgt. 457 (the regiments only had 2 battalions at that time) and then the two battalions of Gren.Rgt. 477. The second battalion was therefore presumably the II./477, which, however, was not transferred to Krivoy Rog, but to the 387th I.D. in the bridgehead.
Regarding the dating 29th/30th: According to KTB 6.A., NARA Roll 1492 Frame 000480, the replacement of Pz.Gren.Rgt. 128 by III./Gren.Rgt. 477 took place on the evening of the 30th. The loading, the railway journey of up to 8 hours (cf. KTB 6.A., NARA Roll 1492 Frame 000176) and the subsequent march of 30 km (a somewhat longer day's march) are to be accomplished on this day. Therefore, the battalion must have arrived at Nikopol railway station the day before, the 29th, because there is no report of a further overnight stay after the train journey.
